Gradle project sync fails in Android Studio

After cloning the FtcRobotController repo into Android Studio, Gradle fails to sync with the following error:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Highest language level could not be found

I am using Android Studio Quail 4 on Ubuntu 26.04. I have a JDK and JRE installed with the $JAVA_HOME variable set outside Android Studio. In IntelliJ, syncing works, but my Explorer doesn’t simplify.

What version of Java are you trying to use? If it’s not what’s called out as supported, it won’t work. (You can’t force it to use a newer version of Java, that’s not going to work.)

Have you tried using Google Gemini or ChatGPT to help you resolve the issue?
